In the past Propipe’s directors have written down as little as possible, and made ad hoc decisions concerning their employees. They have always complied with legal requirements, but not thought much beyond that. They determine pay and other employment terms, and have never had to consider dealing with a trade union. The directors now feel that with relocation they will have to take a more organised and strategic approach. They recognise that if the firm is to grow further, it will have to be well managed, and they want to follow good practice in both their work and employment systems. They have therefore called in an HR consultancy firm to advise them on the relocation and what they should do for the future.
