Preclinical studies on drug metabolism are often conducted on the liver. However, lungs provide valuable insights into the metabolism of inhaled drugs. The tissue models are difficult to procure and show considerable genetic variation. Primary pulmonary cells and cell lines are rendered inaccurate owing to the heterogeneous nature of lungs. In this case, subcellular fractions provide a better representation of lung metabolic enzymes.
